Course Description


This course introduces the students to the software tools provides as part of the EMC Isilon scale-out storage platform that enable administrators to diagnose and troubleshoot the cluster. The course teaches the students the various tools available and how to use them to investigate issues. Topics include system events system logs job engine and system commands as well as log analysis identifying data protection issues and troubleshooting SmartPools network and SmartConnect issues.


Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Use notifications and events to identify and diagnose issues
  • Navigate the system log structure
  • Perform log analysis
  • Demonstrate the use and syntax of sysctl commands
  • Use isi and isi_ commands for diagnosing Isilon cluster issues
  • Differentiate between physical and configuration network issues
  • Identify and resolve networking and SmartConnect issues
  • Troubleshoot SmartPools issues

Duration - 5 Days


This course is intended for EMC and partner personnel involved with the diagnosing and troubleshooting of EMC Isilon NAS solutions. It is a course based on software tools and diagnostics. It is not a hardware based course.


To fully understand the content and successfully complete this course, a student must have a suitable knowledgebase and skill set. The student must have a firm understanding of:

  • Isilon scale-out storage platform
  • Isilon hardware troubleshooting and maintenance procedures
  • Basic networking components including Ethernet, switches, and network aggregation
  • Network protocols including TCP\/IP, DNS, SMB, and NFS
  • Administration of an Isilon cluster

Students should have completed the following EMC courses:
