Modes of Training – Which one works for you best?

If you want to learn, there is really no constraint in today’s world. That is the beauty of this information age. There is provision for all your learning needs. Whether you are short of time or need a free course, you have your pick on how to learn. ELearning has played a major role in making this possible. However, it is good to know the edge eLearning has over other ways of learning.

Online Live (OL) Session: This form of learning happens completely online, in real time and is facilitated by a trainer. SpringPeople delivers training through OL sessions.

Self-Paced (SP) Session: This form of learning is through a pre-recorded presentation. It could be animated or a PPT with a voiceover.

Classroom Session: These are classroom sessions wherein there is an instructor in a physical space.

All training content used and presented through the SpringPeople platform are assessed based on their effectiveness for the client on various parameters. We compare the three learning methods on the same.

Learning Outcomes: At SpringPeople, we believe the most impactful learning environments are those that allow for discussion, deliberation, and interaction, just like in our Training sessions. While SP learning can be effective in some cases, learning from other’s knowledge and experience offers more insights that strengthen knowledge banks. Classroom sessions offer similar perks as OL sessions.

</td>
<td>Ample learning opportunities through books, discussions with trainer and classmates
</td>

• Trainers, like those at SpringPeople, have experience with the subject and can contribute more

• Outcomes are improved if the learner makes additional efforts to learn from multiple sources or discuss with an expert in the field
</td>

• Teachers may or may not have extensive experience with the concept being discussed
</td>

Content Relevancy: This directly impacts employability. There are new developments in all fields of study and it is important that what one learns is in sync with the times. For instance, Online Marketing is important but so is learning about the latest in online marketing the apps, the social networks, marketing tactics and so on. ELeaeLearningtent can be updated as soon as there is a new learning opportunity by the addition of a training module. Upgrading books, on the other hand, take time.

<tr>
<td>• Latest, updated information is available to learners</td>
<td>• Learner needs to make all efforts to learn about the latest on the subject</td>
<td>• Books are not updated rapidly thereby limiting their value</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>• Information can be updated by adding another slide or talking point</td>
<td>• If they don’t keep up, learners might land up reading outdated information</td>
<td>• Additional reading material needs to be referenced </td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>• Maximum value for learner</td>
<td></td>
<td></td>

Savings  SP sessions turn out to be the most cost effective when considering only this aspect. Classroom sessions are most expensive as costs of infrastructure and facilities are usually bundled in the cost-to-customer. OL sessions can be reasonable as compared to Classroom sessions.

Flexibility: OL and SP sessions offer the maximum scheduling freedom. Most OL sessions are pre-scheduled and offer schedules like SpringPeople Training Calendar, giving participants lots of pliancies to register for a course that matches personal schedules. SP sessions offer similar freedom.

<td>Complete freedom for published sessions</td>
<td>Schedules are fixed</td>

<tr>
<td>• Multiple time/day slots are available for registration like at <a href="http://www.springpeople.com/courses/corporate-training-and-workshop-calendar">SpringPeople</a></td>
<td>• Requires discipline on the learners part since its self-managed</td>
<td>• Set number of classes, predefined, must be attended</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>

Professional Applicability: Perhaps the biggest challenge with eLearning is that there is not a substitute for lab and practicum work, where it is critical to the learning outcomes. Professions like doctors, lawyers, engineers, and others must work in the field as cases vary based on the subjects.

<tbody>
<tr>
<td>Limited to courses that do not need lab work</td>
<td>Limited to courses that do not require attending regular classes</td>
<td>Applicable to all professions</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>On-the-job training possible for certain jobs and not for others</td>
<td>On-the-job learning scope is limited</td>
<td>On-the-job training is an extension of classroom training</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>

In our opinion, OL sessions offer the maximum benefits from a learner’s perspective. On-the-job training is somewhat irreplaceable in some professions, and that is where blended learning is a great alternative; merging the benefits of online and classroom sessions. All sessions at SpringPeople are delivered online and our clients find our Training Calendar very effective in planning their trainings.
