Technology has been advancing at a rapid rate for the last couple of years. As we move into 2018, we expect this trend to intensify. In this article, I am going to highlight 6 technology trends that are expected to be key talking points in 2018 and beyond.

1. AI and Machine Learning to Dictate Activities

Artificial Intelligence in tandem with Machine Learning algorithms is gaining wider application platforms than we thought was ever possible. Large volumes of data are being churned out at rapid rates which are extensively used by machine learning algorithms to generate and determine patterns and user behavior.

According to a Gartner survey, 59% organizations have improved and fast-tracked their method of gathering information for AI strategies while the remaining have already adopted AI solutions into their workflow on a trial basis.

AI is already starting to make an appearance in new platforms and with higher funding and importance on AI, expect your daily life to be governed by AI powered machines and robots in the near future.

2. The Blockchain

block chainA blockchain is an interconnected list of records of multiple parties that are linked and secured by cryptography. According to the Harvard Business Review, a blockchain is an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way. With the help of blockchain it is possible to maintain a comprehensive record of commercial transactions between untrusted parties. It allows digital information to be distributed but not copied. The information is encrypted with cryptography and hence secure.

Although this technology is tagged mainly with financial opportunities it has potential applications in government, healthcare, supply chain and more. Expect the blockchain to be a key talking point in 2018 as it has the potential to change industries

3. Conversational Platforms

With the rapid advancements in machine learning and AI, gone are the days when the user had to translate his information to make the computer understand. This burden is now taken care by the computer itself. Voice interaction platforms have been in use for some time now but these are capable of simple interactions and are often unreliable.

These platforms are undergoing a complete shift to improve its efficiency as is indicated by Microsoft’s latest test which affirms a 5.1% error rate for its voice recognition software making it more efficient in speech recognition than human transcribers.

A major setback that these platforms face is that the users need to communicate with them in a very structured manner which could often be a frustrating experience. But the rate at which these platforms are evolving, expect users to be able to perform two-way conversations with these devices seamlessly.

4. Chatbots to Be a Part of Our Daily Routine

We have often interacted with bots while receiving promotional phone calls or confirming ticket reservations. With AI at its peak, expect these bots to find their way into our daily work-life and even our homes.

These natural language AI-powered chatbots are gaining immense popularity in customer service and support. By studying the response patterns and questions asked by the customers, these chatbots can respond to the customer needs and even predict what they want. They are free from the human inconsistencies and can hence prove to be a successful import to the industry.

In addition, also expect these bots to find their presence in our homes, They can be used to aid us in our daily work such as notify us that it’s time to have our dinner or our favorite tv show begins in 10 mins. So, expect 2018 to be the year, these bots become a part of our daily life.

5. Augmented Reality

As soon as we talk about AR, the Pokemon Go game which captured the craze among the youth is the first thing that comes to mind. The power of augmented reality is the ability to provide people the information they need at their fingertips.

AR is expected to go mainstream with the evolution of Heads Up Displays or HUDs as they are popularly called. With the help of these HUDs, it is now possible to bring live events into your living room.

The experience of watching a Formula1 race on your living room can be elevated to that from the driver’s seat. With the help of AR you can personalize your F1 race to the extent of you actually being involved in it. AR has the potential to combine real and virtual objects to enhance experiences for all out-of-home activities.

6. Cybersecurity

With the advancements in technology and automation, and the subsequent increase in IoT and internet interaction platforms, the threat to cybersecurity continues to be at a rise. Investors are pouring in enormous amounts of money into cybersecurity companies.

In my previous article I have covered the various ways you can improve cybersecurity. With the imminent threat from all corners, expect security experts to come up with effective measures and change the face of cybersecurity in 2018.

So these are 6 technical trends that are expected to drive the industry in 2018. As you can see Machine Learning and AI is set to dominate the technology industry with its application in other technologies. Get yourself equipped with our latest machine learning training courses .
